Friday 6th March: The Good Liar (15)

Career con artist Roy Courtnay can hardly believe his luck when he meets well to do widow Betty McLeish online. As Betty opens her home and life to him, Roy is surprised to find himself caring about her, turning what should be a cut and dry swindle into the most treacherous tightrope walk of his life. With Helen Mirren, Russell Tovey, and Ian McKellen.

Friday 7th February: Downton Abbey (PG)

The Crawleys and their intrepid staff prepare for the most important moment of their lives. A royal visit from the King and Queen of England will unleash scandal, romance and intrigue that will leave the future of Downton hanging in the balance With Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern and Maggie Smith.

Friday 18th October: Fisherman’s Friend (12A)

Ten fisherman from Cornwall are signed by Universal Records and achieve a top ten hit with their debut album of Sea Shanties.

2018/9 Season

Friday 8th March: King of Thieves (15)

A true crime film about a crew of retired crooks who pull off a major heist in London’s jewellery district. What starts off as their last criminal hurrah quickly turns into a brutal nightmare due to greed. Based on infamous true events.

Friday 8th February: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (12A)

Directed by Mike Newell and based on the best-selling and much loved novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, The Guernsey and Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society sees Lily James play free-spirited writer Juliet Ashton, who forms a life-changing bond with the delightful and eccentric Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, when she decides to write about the book club they formed during the occupation of Guernsey in WWII.

Friday 9th November: Journey’s End (12A)

Set in a dugout in Aisne in 1918, it is the story of a group of British officers, led by the mentally disintegrating young officer Stanhope, as they await their fate. Journey’s End brings R.C. Sherriff’s 90-year-old play to the screen with thrilling power, thanks to director Saul Dibb’s hard-hitting urgency and brilliant work from a talented cast, including Paul Bettany and Sam Claflin.

Friday 19th October: On Chesil Beach (15)

Based on Ian McEwan’s novel. The drama centers on a young couple of drastically different backgrounds in the summer of 1962. Following the pair through their idyllic courtship, the film explores sex and the societal pressure that can accompany physical intimacy, leading to an awkward and fateful wedding night. The film stars Saoirse Ronan, Billy Howle, Anne-Marie Duff, Adrian Scarborough, Emily Watson, and Samuel West.

2017/8 Season

Friday 9th March: Victoria and Abdul (PG)

The extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship in the later years of Queen Victoria’s (Judi Dench) remarkable rule. When Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favour with the Queen herself. The two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance with a loyalty to one another that her household and inner circle all attempt to destroy. As the friendship deepens, the Queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes and joyfully reclaims her humanity.

Friday 9th February: Dunkirk (12A)

May/June 1940. 400,000 British soldiers are holed up in the French port town of Dunkirk. The only way out is via sea, and the Germans have air superiority, bombing the British soldiers and ships without much opposition. The situation looks dire and, in desperation, Britain sends civilian boats to try to evacuate the beleaguered forces. This is that story, seen through the eyes of a soldier amongst those trapped forces, two RAF fighter pilots and a group of civilians on their boat, part of the evacuation fleet. Directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Tom Hardy and Mark Rylance.

Friday 10th November: Churchill (PG)

Tensions mount for beleaguered British Prime Minister Winston Churchill as D-Day nears in June 1944. Fearful of repeating past mistakes, Churchill is reluctant to embark on the large-scale campaign that the entire war effort hinges upon. Clashing with his political opponents, the troubled leader receives unwavering support from his devoted wife, Clementine. With strength and shrewdness, she tries to prevent his physical, mental and spiritual collapse while inspiring him to achieve greatness.

Friday 13th October: Their Finest (12A)

1940, London, the Blitz; with the country’s morale at stake, Catrin (Gemma Arterton), an untried screenwriter, and a makeshift cast and crew, work under fire to make a film to lift the nation’s flagging spirits; and inspire America to join the war. Partnered alongside fellow screenwriter, Buckley (Sam Claflin) and eccentric actor Ambrose Hilliard (Bill Nighy), the trio set off to make a film that will warm the hearts of the nation and capture the imagination of the American population. THEIR FINEST, based on Lissa Evans’ novel, ‘Their Finest Hour and a Half’, is a witty, romantic and moving portrayal of a young woman finding her way, and her voice, in the mayhem of war… and the movies!

2016/7 Season

Friday 10th March: The Girl on the Train (15)

The Girl on the Train is the story of Rachel Watson’s life post-divorce. Every day, she takes the train in to work in New York, and every day the train passes by her old house. The house she lived in with her husband, who still lives there, with his new wife and child. As she attempts to not focus on her pain, she starts watching a couple who live a few houses down — Megan and Scott Hipwell. She creates a wonderful dream life for them in her head, about how they are a perfect happy family. And then one day, as the train passes, she sees something shocking, filling her with rage. The next day, she wakes up with a horrible hangover, various wounds and bruises, and no memory of the night before. She has only a feeling: something bad happened. Then come the TV reports: Megan Hipwell is missing. Rachel becomes invested in the case and trying to find out what happened to Megan, where she is, and what exactly she herself was up to that same night Megan went missing.

Friday 17th February: Bridget Jones’s Baby (15)

Bridget Jones is now a fortysomething news producer, however, her single life and her career is interrupted when she discovers that she’s pregnant. There is one hitch though in that she isn’t sure if the baby’s father is Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), her on-and-off boyfriend, or Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey), her new American love interest.

Sharon Maguire, who directed 2001’s Bridget Jones’s Diary, returns to helm this sequel. Jim Broadbent, Gemma Jones, and Emma Thompson co-star.

Friday 27th January: Absolutely Fabulous (15)

Edina and Patsy are still oozing glitz and glamour, living the high life they are accustomed to; shopping, drinking and clubbing their way around London’s trendiest hotspots. Blamed for a major incident at an uber fashionable launch party’ they become entangled in a media storm and are relentlessly pursued by the paparazzi. Fleeing penniless to the glamorous playground of the super-rich, the French Riviera, they hatch a plan to make permanent their escape and live the high life forever more!

In true Ab Fab style, the cast are joined by a host of A-list stars from the acting, music and fashion worlds.

Friday 18th November: Florence Foster Jenkins (PG)

The true story of Florence Foster Jenkins (Meryl Streep), the legendary New York heiress and socialite who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great opera singer. The voice she heard in her head was beautiful, but to everyone else it was hilariously awful. Her “husband” and manager, St Clair Bayfield (Hugh Grant) an aristocratic English actor, was determined to protect his beloved Florence from the truth. But when Florence decided to give a public concert at Carnegie Hall in 1944, St Clair knew he faced his greatest challenge.

Friday 14th October 2016: Eddie the Eagle (PG)

Inspired by true events, Eddie the Eagle is a feel-good story about Michael “Eddie” Edwards, an unlikely but courageous British ski-jumper who never stopped believing in himself – even as an entire nation was counting him out. With the help of a rebellious and charismatic coach, Eddie takes on the establishment and wins the hearts of sports fans around the world by making an improbable and historic showing at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. .

Directed by Dexter Fletcher, Eddie the Eagle is a feelgood film about that classic British stereotype – the plucky loser.
