Welborne Church History & Services

Our lovely 11th Century village church is one of the Norfolk Round Tower churches. The church is approached via the Lychgate, constructed in 1880 by a local woodcarver, a Mr. John Parley.

To really appreciate the church’s beauty, a visit inside is a must.  It has a very ornate Rood Screen, which was painted and gilded in 1912. The Reredos also calls for closer inspection to view the fine details it has within it.

The choir stalls also have fine carvings, these again need a closer look to appreciate the detail they contain.  The font is from medieval times, and is still used for baptisms today.  It was restored to its original place after standing in the churchyard for about 50 years.

The Church

The round tower of this church, which has only one bell, has called people to worship here for about 1000 years. The tower lacks the conventional belfry windows and doorways by which it might be dated, but its measurements, flint work & design are similar to other East Anglian round towers of the 11th century just before the conquest.

Stepping into this church reminds one of the Saxon foundations here. The font is a simple medieval one with an unusual design. It stood in the churchyard for about 50 years, growing flowers, until it was restored to its original place.

There are some outstanding wood carvings within the church which must be seen to be admired.  The altar reredos is extremely decorative, and needs to be seen to explore the finer details, and the wrought iron candlesticks fixed to the walls were made by a local blacksmith in the 1930’s.  There are also several stained glass windows.

Definitely a church worth visiting for its beauty and its worship.
